    Description

In the years following the California Gold Rush, a problem emerged:  too much gold and not enough paper money.   To fix this issue, the US Senate authorized the creation of 0 and gold coins named the "UNION" and "HALF UNION".  These would have been the largest circulating coins in US History.  Unfortunately, the bill died in the House of Representatives.
George T. Morgan produced this design for the 0 Union coin to be offered in Gold.  This Private Issue Medal is brought from the Smithsonian Institute as one of America's Lost Masterpieces.
